A good veterinary technician is invaluable to the veterinarian. Most veterinarians rely heavily on their technicians, much the way a physician relies on the nursing staff. A veterinary technician is a skilled professional with extensive training, and licensed veterinary technicians have passed a rigorous state licensing examination. Licensing provides the assurance that the technician has demonstrated clinical and academic proficiency involving a wide range of skills. Responsibilities may vary from hospital to hospital, but the basic duties remain the same. For instance, veterinary technicians collect blood, perform laboratory tests, monitor anesthesia during surgical procedures, assist during patient exams and dental cleanings, and take x-rays. In addition, senior technicians often are tasked with administrative duties such as training other staff members, assisting in inventory management, and developing hospital protocols.
